Three minute thesis®

The University of Castilla-La Mancha organizes Three Minute Thesis (3MT®).

Within the framework of promotion of scientific, technical and cultural divulgation, and the organization of academic activities for the doctoral students, the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) organizes the THREE MINUTE THESIS competition, where research students will face the challenge to communicate the significance of their projects to a general audience in just three minutes.

Organization and stages

The contest is organized in three stages:

Selection stage. +INFO

Qualifying stage.  +INFO

Date and place

Both the qualifying and the final will be held in June 2017 on the Campus of Albacete. The organization will conveniently assist students from other campuses who need to travel.
The exact place and date will be communicated well in advance to the participants of the qualifying and the final stages.

Judging panel

The Steering Committee of the IDS will compose the judging panel in the selection stage.

In the qualifying and final stages the judging panel will be composed at least by three members, one of which will be an expert in communication.

Judging criteria

At every level of the competition each competitor will be assessed on these judging criteria.

AFTER making the registration, participants must send the video referred to in the ORGANIZATION AND STAGES section of the call, before April 30th, 2017.

No, the competition is open to all the students of the different branches of knowledge.

All doctoral students of the UCLM who have successfully passed at least one evaluation of the Activities Document and Research Plan (RAPI) and paid the academic supervision at the time of publication of the call are eligible. Priority will be given to the doctoral students who are in their third year of thesis (full time) or in their fourth if their dedication is part-time.

Yes, palm cards and/or speech notes are acceptable, however this option may detract from the delivery of the 3MT and is not recommended.

No, additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are not permitted during a 3MT presentation. Laser pointers are allowed, however not encouraged (your slide should be simple enough that you do not need to emphasize elements to the audience)

Yes, quotes can be included from a poem or song if it is relevant to the presenter’s thesis topic. Poetry and song lyrics are not permitted to be used to present the entire 3MT® and their use should be very limited.

One single static PowerPoint slide is permitted. In preparing the slide, remember that ‘less is more’. It does not have to include text. Visual cues are very effective in assisting the presenter’s explanation of their research (No slide transitions, animations, sound or ‘movement’ is permitted).

No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) is permitted during a 3MT presentation.

No, Interaction with the audience is not permitted.

No, remote presentations are not allowed.

There is no stipulated dress requirement such as ‘smart casual’. Some have worn suits with ties, others t-shirts and jeans. Please wear whatever is comfortable for you. NO COSTUMES (including hats, masks, Dame Edna specs, etc.)
